In particular, this training is aimed at those who want to become Software Carpentry and Data Carpentry instructors, run workshops and contribute to the Carpentry training materials. You don't currently have to be an instructor or a teacher to attend this workshop, but you do need to be willing and committed to becoming one and to improving your teaching techniques. Software Carpentry and Data Carpentry's mission is to help scientists and engineers get more research done in less time and with less pain by teaching them basic lab skills for scientific computing. This hands-on two-day workshop covers the basics of educational psychology and instructional design, and looks at how to use these ideas in both intensive workshops and regular classes. The workshop is a mix of lectures and hands-on lessons where you practice giving a short lesson using approaches learned and implement some of the teaching techniques which we will discuss. This is training for teaching, not technical training; you do not need any particular technical background, and we will not be teaching that. This workshop is based on the constantly revised and updated curriculum. Requirements: When possible, participants should bring a laptop that can be connected to Internet to follow teaching materials and developing shared note. </br> A device for recording audio and video (mobile phones and laptops are OK) will also be useful as throughout the two days, we are going to record one another teaching in pairs or threes. It does not have to be high-quality, but it should be good enough that you can understand what someone is saying. Please note that after this course is over, you will be asked to do three short follow-up exercises online in order to finish qualifying as an instructor: the details are available at https://carpentries.github.io/instructor-training/checkout/. If you have any questions about the workshop, the reading material, or anything else, please get in touch. All participants are required to abide by The Carpentries' Code of Conduct. Accessibility: We are committed to making this workshop accessible to everybody. Please contact the workshop organisers to let them know if need any assistance to make your participation at the workshop more comfortable. Materials will be provided in advance of the workshop and large-print handouts are available if needed by notifying the organizers in advance. If we can help making learning easier for you (e.g. requirements related to mobility, dietary etc.) please please get in touch (using contact details below) and we will attempt to provide them. Preparation: Please read the following before the workshop begins: 1. The Science of Learning Please also read through one of the episodes below carefully, so that you can do some exercises based on it on the first day of the class. 2019-04-03 09:00:00 UTC 2019-04-05 00:00:00 UTC [] jessica.lindvall@scilifelab.se [] [] [] [] []

The course participants are expected to do some pre-course reading and exercises, corresponding up to 16h studying. The education consists of teaching blocks alternating between mini-lectures, group discussions, live coding sessions etc. A special focus is put on understanding basic concepts by solving problems with pen and paper. We believe in less-is-more principle, so be ready to say no to digital exhaustion to truly learn something with our modern “blackboard approach”. Genome assembly and annotation course 5 https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/genome-assembly-and-annotation-course-5 A **genome assembly and annotation course** will take place on **July 1-5, 2019** in **Milan, Italy**, hosted by the Italian ELIXIR Node in cooperation with other ELIXIR nodes that are involved in the ELIXIR-EXCELERATE task 10.3 “Capacity Building in Genome Assembly and Annotation”. Some of the most experienced assembly and annotation experts in Europe will be teaching at the course. The course is aimed at researchers interested in learning more about genome assembly and annotation. It will include information useful for both the beginner and the more advanced user. We will start by introducing general concepts and then continue with a step-by-step description of all major components of a genome assembly and annotation workflow, from raw data all the way to a final assembled and annotated genome. There will be a mix of lectures and hands-on practical exercises using Unix/Linux command line. After the course, the participants will have knowledge of commonly used assembly practices and tools. They will be able to run assembly and annotation projects on their own. **Prerequisites:** - **Working knowledge of Unix/Linux command line** - **As part of the course agenda, course participants will prepare a short presentation about their own projects.** Optionally, they may also bring their own data. **Instructions how to register for the course are available on the [ELIXIR-SI eLearning Platform (EELP)](https://elixir.mf.uni-lj.si/course/view.php?id=45).** You will be able to access the course after you register and your registration is approved by the course organizers. 2019-07-01 09:00:00 UTC 2019-07-05 17:00:00 UTC ELIXIR Italy University of Milano-Bicocca, Building U7, Lab 715, Milan, Italy University of Milano-Bicocca, Building U7, Lab 715 Milan Città Metropolitana di Milano Italy Genomics University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy General questions: gianluca.dellavedova@unimib.it Questions about the course agenda: henrik.lantz@nbis.se National Research Council of ItalyINRANBIS - National Bioinformatics Infrastructure SwedenELIXIR EXCELERATE life scientistsResearchersPhD students 24 workshops_and_courses registration_of_interest Genomics AssemblyTrainingeLearningEeLP
