  • Plant Phenotyping

    12 November 2019

    Oeiras, Portugal

Plant Phenotyping https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/plant-phenotyping Plant phenotyping research has gone through a data revolution with the automation of plant phenotyping platforms, making it critical to adopt good data management practices in order the exploit the torrent of data to its full potential. Concretely, data should be published in a Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR) way in order to enable the integration of data from disparate sources and the discovery of new knowledge. Yet, this is one of the more challenging domains to standardize, as it is extremely heterogeneous in terms of experimental settings and types of data. The ELIXIR infrastructure, with prominent contributions from BioData.pt (the Portuguese ELIXIR node) has been tackling this challenge at the European and international level, by developing standards and services to enable the management of plant phenotype-genotype data and its publication in accordance with the FAIR principles. In this workshop, we will be presenting the outcomes of this work from the ELIXIR plant sciences community, featuring a keynote from one of its key members, Dr. Anne-Françoise Adam-Blondon (ELIXIR-France), a detailed tutorial about the design and usage of the MIAPPE (Minimum Information About Plant Phenotyping Experiments), a hands-on data annotation and publication session, and a demonstration of ELIXIR’s Plant Data Search service. 2019-11-12 14:00:00 UTC 2019-11-12 19:00:00 UTC ITQB Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier, Oeiras, Portugal Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier Oeiras Lisbon Portugal 2775-412 Oeiras ITQB NOVA - Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier, Universidade Nova de LisboaBiodata.pt - Elixir's portuguese node of the european projec [] Life Science ResearchersBiologists, Genomicists, Computer Scientistsplant researchers workshops_and_courses [] Plant PhenotypingGenotypingdata managementbioinformatics
  • Introductory Linux Tutorial for Life Sciences 4

    10 - 12 December 2019

    Elixir node event
Introductory Linux Tutorial for Life Sciences 4 https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/introductory-linux-tutorial-for-life-sciences-4 NBIS (the Swedish node of ELIXIR) and ELIXIR Slovenia are offering an "Introduction to Linux" course targeted at life scientists who want to extend their skills and knowledge. Big data (usually in the form of large text files) are generated nowadays in many fields of science. Trying to handle this data with applications like Word or Excel is difficult or impossible, while using the Linux command line can improve data processing efficiency. Unix/Linux provides an excellent computing environment for several disciplines (such as bioinformatics, physics, engineering) and the command line interpreter (shell) serves as an interface to many big-data processing programs. The course provides a basic introduction to Unix/Linux commands and covers how Unix/Linux commands can be used to manage and inspect your data and results, and how to generate and run pipelines and workflows using basic shell scripting. Finally, we will show you how the command line is used for access to supercomputers for boosting your scientific research. Participants will be able to attend the course either by traveling to Stockholm or to Umeå in Sweden, to Ljubljana in Slovenia, or by connecting remotely via the ELIXIR Slovenia eLearning Platform (EeLP). The number of remote students is limited to 30. The number of students per classroom is limited to 15 for Stockholm and Umeå, and 20 for Ljubljana. Additional participants will be placed on a waiting list and contacted as soon as space becomes available. The course will be broadcast from Sweden. ***The registration deadline has been extended until Friday, November 22.*** 2019-12-10 09:00:00 UTC 2019-12-12 17:00:00 UTC ELIXIR Sweden (NBIS) and ELIXIR Slovenia Bioinformatics Computer science NBISUniversity of Ljubljana, Faculty of Medicine [] Life Science ResearchersbioinformaticiansBiophysicistsengineers [] [] life sciences LinuxUnixEeLPeLearningCommand line
  • Disorder in Disorders: Pathogenic mechanisms of Intrinsically Disordered Proteins

    27 - 31 January 2020

Disorder in Disorders: Pathogenic mechanisms of Intrinsically Disordered Proteins https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/disorder-in-disorders-pathogenic-mechanisms-of-intrinsically-disordered-proteins Intrinsically Disordered Proteins (IDPs) are a highly abundant class of proteins that lack stable tertiary and/or secondary structures under physiological conditions. Numerous IDPs are associated with human diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, amyloidoses, neurodegenerative diseases, and diabetes. Overall, intriguing interconnections among intrinsic disorder, cell signaling, and human diseases suggest that protein conformational diseases may result not only from protein misfolding, but also from misidentification, missignaling, and unnatural or nonnative folding. The winter school will alternate lectures to practicals. During lectures, experts of the field will provide students an overview of IDP biological mechanisms that develop pathogenic phenotypes. They will explore the concepts of folding, unfolding and misfolding, highlighting their differences and similarities. Practical exercises aim at transferring to students basic skills for the study of IDPs and will revolve around the use of bioinformatic tools to solve complex problems. The school includes a half-day workshop on ELIXIR interoperability services and support for the IDP Community. 2020-01-27 09:00:00 UTC 2020-01-31 17:00:00 UTC Università degli Studi di Padova - Casa della Gioventù, Via Rio Bianco,12 Università degli Studi di Padova - Casa della Gioventù, Via Rio Bianco,12 Protein properties Protein disordered structure Bioinformatics University of Padova, Italy idpfun@ngp-net.bio.unipd.it [] PhD studentspostdoctoral researchersLife Science Researchers workshops_and_courses first_come_first_servedregistration_of_interest intrinsically disordered proteinsprotein foldingbioinformatics
