  • Training course on Python for Life Scientists

    11 - 15 September 2017

    Roma, Italy

Training course on Python for Life Scientists https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/training-course-on-python-for-life-scientists Python is an object-oriented programming language that is ideal for biological data analysis. The course will start from zero knowledge, and will introduce the participants to all the basic concepts of Python such as calculating, organizing data, reading and writing files, program logic and writing larger programs. All the examples and practical sessions will focus on solving biological problems. In particular the sessions will cover: - working with DNA and protein sequences - data retrieval from files and their manipulation - running applications, such as BLAST, locally and from a script - finding motifs in sequence - parsing common file formats (Uniprot, GenBank, PDB) - ways to find and correct program errors. The course will be highly interactive and the students will continuously put theory into practice while learning. Basic Unix/Linux skills will be provided at the beginning of the course. 2017-09-11 09:00:00 UTC 2017-09-15 18:00:00 UTC Veronica Morea (CNR-IBPM, Rome, Italy), Allegra Via (ELIXIR-IIB Training Coordinator, CNR-IBPM, Italy), Loredana Le Pera (ELIXIR-IIB Training Team, IIT@Sapienza, Italy) Dipartimento di Scienze Biochimiche - Alessandro Rossi Fanelli, 332, Viale Regina Elena, Roma, Italy Dipartimento di Scienze Biochimiche - Alessandro Rossi Fanelli, 332, Viale Regina Elena Roma Città Metropolitana di Roma Italy 00185 Computer science Bioinformatics Computational biology Sapienza University of Rome elixir.ita.training@gmail.com, loredanalepera@gmail.com ELIXIR Italy BiologistsBioinformatics beginners 20 workshops_and_courses first_come_first_servedregistration_of_interest Python for BiologistsbioinformaticsComputer ProgrammingBiological databasesPython

  • Genome assembly and annotation course 5

    1 - 5 July 2019

    Milan, Italy

    Elixir node event
Genome assembly and annotation course 5 https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/genome-assembly-and-annotation-course-5 A **genome assembly and annotation course** will take place on **July 1-5, 2019** in **Milan, Italy**, hosted by the Italian ELIXIR Node in cooperation with other ELIXIR nodes that are involved in the ELIXIR-EXCELERATE task 10.3 “Capacity Building in Genome Assembly and Annotation”. Some of the most experienced assembly and annotation experts in Europe will be teaching at the course. The course is aimed at researchers interested in learning more about genome assembly and annotation. It will include information useful for both the beginner and the more advanced user. We will start by introducing general concepts and then continue with a step-by-step description of all major components of a genome assembly and annotation workflow, from raw data all the way to a final assembled and annotated genome. There will be a mix of lectures and hands-on practical exercises using Unix/Linux command line. After the course, the participants will have knowledge of commonly used assembly practices and tools. They will be able to run assembly and annotation projects on their own. **Prerequisites:** - **Working knowledge of Unix/Linux command line** - **As part of the course agenda, course participants will prepare a short presentation about their own projects.** Optionally, they may also bring their own data. **Instructions how to register for the course are available on the [ELIXIR-SI eLearning Platform (EELP)](https://elixir.mf.uni-lj.si/course/view.php?id=45).** You will be able to access the course after you register and your registration is approved by the course organizers. 2019-07-01 09:00:00 UTC 2019-07-05 17:00:00 UTC ELIXIR Italy University of Milano-Bicocca, Building U7, Lab 715, Milan, Italy University of Milano-Bicocca, Building U7, Lab 715 Milan Città Metropolitana di Milano Italy Genomics University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy General questions: gianluca.dellavedova@unimib.it Questions about the course agenda: henrik.lantz@nbis.se National Research Council of ItalyINRANBIS - National Bioinformatics Infrastructure SwedenELIXIR EXCELERATE life scientistsResearchersPhD students 24 workshops_and_courses registration_of_interest Genomics AssemblyTrainingeLearningEeLP

  • Disorder in Disorders: Pathogenic mechanisms of Intrinsically Disordered Proteins

    27 - 31 January 2020

Disorder in Disorders: Pathogenic mechanisms of Intrinsically Disordered Proteins https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/disorder-in-disorders-pathogenic-mechanisms-of-intrinsically-disordered-proteins Intrinsically Disordered Proteins (IDPs) are a highly abundant class of proteins that lack stable tertiary and/or secondary structures under physiological conditions. Numerous IDPs are associated with human diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, amyloidoses, neurodegenerative diseases, and diabetes. Overall, intriguing interconnections among intrinsic disorder, cell signaling, and human diseases suggest that protein conformational diseases may result not only from protein misfolding, but also from misidentification, missignaling, and unnatural or nonnative folding. The winter school will alternate lectures to practicals. During lectures, experts of the field will provide students an overview of IDP biological mechanisms that develop pathogenic phenotypes. They will explore the concepts of folding, unfolding and misfolding, highlighting their differences and similarities. Practical exercises aim at transferring to students basic skills for the study of IDPs and will revolve around the use of bioinformatic tools to solve complex problems. The school includes a half-day workshop on ELIXIR interoperability services and support for the IDP Community. 2020-01-27 09:00:00 UTC 2020-01-31 17:00:00 UTC Università degli Studi di Padova - Casa della Gioventù, Via Rio Bianco,12 Università degli Studi di Padova - Casa della Gioventù, Via Rio Bianco,12 Protein properties Protein disordered structure Bioinformatics University of Padova, Italy idpfun@ngp-net.bio.unipd.it [] PhD studentspostdoctoral researchersLife Science Researchers workshops_and_courses first_come_first_servedregistration_of_interest intrinsically disordered proteinsprotein foldingbioinformatics
