The course will start from zero knowledge, and will introduce the participants to all the basic concepts of Python such as calculating, organizing data, reading and writing files, program logic and writing larger programs. All the examples and practical sessions will focus on solving biological problems. In particular the sessions will cover: - working with DNA and protein sequences - data retrieval from files and their manipulation - running applications, such as BLAST, locally and from a script - finding motifs in sequence - parsing common file formats (Uniprot, GenBank, PDB) - ways to find and correct program errors. The course will be highly interactive and the students will continuously put theory into practice while learning. 27 - 31 January 2020Disorder in Disorders: Pathogenic mechanisms of Intrinsically Disordered Proteins https://elixir-iib-training.github.io/website/2020/01/27/winter-school-idp-brixen.html https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/disorder-in-disorders-pathogenic-mechanisms-of-intrinsically-disordered-proteins Intrinsically Disordered Proteins (IDPs) are a highly abundant class of proteins that lack stable tertiary and/or secondary structures under physiological conditions. Numerous IDPs are associated with human diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, amyloidoses, neurodegenerative diseases, and diabetes. Overall, intriguing interconnections among intrinsic disorder, cell signaling, and human diseases suggest that protein conformational diseases may result not only from protein misfolding, but also from misidentification, missignaling, and unnatural or nonnative folding. The winter school will alternate lectures to practicals. During lectures, experts of the field will provide students an overview of IDP biological mechanisms that develop pathogenic phenotypes. They will explore the concepts of folding, unfolding and misfolding, highlighting their differences and similarities. Practical exercises aim at transferring to students basic skills for the study of IDPs and will revolve around the use of bioinformatic tools to solve complex problems.
