  • FAIR Data Management in Life Sciences

    FAIR Data Management in Life Sciences https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/fair-data-management-in-life-sciences Are you curious about data management, or how research groups handle their data management pipelines? Do you want to engage with other like-minded researchers in best practice for your data management? Are you overwhelmed by new regulations from funders requiring data management plans? Or are you a developer in the data management sphere? Then come and join our workshop/user meeting on “FAIR Data Management in Life Sciences” as a satellite meeting of the ICSB 2018 in Lyon France. It will be held Saturday 27th October before the main meeting. Registration is free, and is first come first served. Research projects with advanced data management pipelines will be presenting their best practice. Thought leaders in data management will be there to help you with any questions you have. Importantly, YOU get to decide on break out topics or steer discussion during the day. This workshop will be hosted by the FAIRDOM infrastructure (https://fair-dom.org), and bring together FAIRDOM users, FAIR platform developers, and researchers from across the world to discuss: (i) best practices in data management; (ii) cutting edge platform development, and; (iii) community use and requirements of FAIR data platforms. Our key theme this year will be integrating the data pipeline for cross platform data exchange.   • Plant Phenotyping

    Plant Phenotyping https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/plant-phenotyping Plant phenotyping research has gone through a data revolution with the automation of plant phenotyping platforms, making it critical to adopt good data management practices in order the exploit the torrent of data to its full potential. Concretely, data should be published in a Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR) way in order to enable the integration of data from disparate sources and the discovery of new knowledge. Yet, this is one of the more challenging domains to standardize, as it is extremely heterogeneous in terms of experimental settings and types of data. The ELIXIR infrastructure, with prominent contributions from BioData.pt (the Portuguese ELIXIR node) has been tackling this challenge at the European and international level, by developing standards and services to enable the management of plant phenotype-genotype data and its publication in accordance with the FAIR principles.     Disorder in Disorders: Pathogenic mechanisms of Intrinsically Disordered Proteins https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/disorder-in-disorders-pathogenic-mechanisms-of-intrinsically-disordered-proteins Intrinsically Disordered Proteins (IDPs) are a highly abundant class of proteins that lack stable tertiary and/or secondary structures under physiological conditions. Numerous IDPs are associated with human diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, amyloidoses, neurodegenerative diseases, and diabetes. Overall, intriguing interconnections among intrinsic disorder, cell signaling, and human diseases suggest that protein conformational diseases may result not only from protein misfolding, but also from misidentification, missignaling, and unnatural or nonnative folding. The winter school will alternate lectures to practicals. During lectures, experts of the field will provide students an overview of IDP biological mechanisms that develop pathogenic phenotypes. They will explore the concepts of folding, unfolding and misfolding, highlighting their differences and similarities. Practical exercises aim at transferring to students basic skills for the study of IDPs and will revolve around the use of bioinformatic tools to solve complex problems.
