This workshop is aimed at complete beginners and assumes no prior programming experience. It gives an overview of the language with an emphasis on practical problem-solving, using examples and exercises drawn from various aspects of bioinformatics work. The workshop is structured so that the parts of the language most useful for bioinformatics are introduced as early as possible, and that students can start writing plausibly-useful programs after the first few sessions.     Type 2 Immunity in Homeostasis and Disease https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/type-2-immunity-in-homeostasis-and-disease Type 2 inflammation rich in eosinophils, basophils and mast cells and orchestrated by Th2 lymphocytes has been mainly studied in the context of allergies and immune responses to helminths. Since the discovery of type 2 innate lymphoid cells there has been a strong interest in understanding how type 2 immunity is induced and regulated, for example by barrier epithelial cells. Given the recent introduction of new biologics that target type 2 cytokines to treat severe allergic disease, we are accumulating a lot of new insights on type 2 immune responses in humans as well. This meeting will not only focus on new effector and regulatory mechanisms of the type 2 immune response. It will also offer a number of talks taking a broader look on type 2 immunity, dealing with such topics as type 2 immunity in homeostasis, growth and repair, metabolism, neuro-immune interactions and cancer. Understanding these alternative roles for type 2 immunity will be important to address the benefits and potential pitfalls of long-term inhibition of type 2 immunity by biologicals and could elucidate new therapeutic pathways for very common diseases like asthma, obesity, diabetes and cancer.     CPANG19 https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/cpang19 Reference genomes have become central to bioinformatics approaches, and form the core of standard analyses using contemporary sequencing data. However, the use of linear reference genomes, which provide the sequence of one representative genome for a species, is increasingly becoming a limitation as the number of sequenced genomes grows. In particular, they tend to bias us away from the observation of variation in the genomes we study. A general solution to this problem is to use a pangenome that incorporates both sequence and variation from many individuals as our reference system. This pangenome is naturally modelled as a graph with annotations and can provide all the functionality traditionally provided by linear reference genomes. Unlike linear reference genomes, a pangenome readily incorporates both small and large variation, allowing bias-free genotyping at known alleles. In this course we will explore the use of modern bioinformatic tools that allow researchers to use pangenomes as their reference system when engaging in studies of organisms of all types. Such techniques will aid any researcher working on organisms of high genetic diversity or on organisms lacking a high-quality reference genome. This course targets all researchers interested in learning about an exciting paradigm shift in computational genomics. Objectives Participants first will learn about limitations of linear reference-based methods and work through a brief refresher or introduction to standard approaches for processing sequencing data, including read alignment and variant calling. One of the main purposes of the conference is to **visualize and promote the research done by women scientists** and for this reason, all presenters will be women, although the conference is open to everyone.
