Machine learning gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed. It encompasses a broad range of approaches to data analysis with applicability across the biological sciences. Lectures will introduce commonly used algorithms and provide insight into their theoretical underpinnings. In the practicals students will apply these algorithms to real biological data-sets using the R language and environment. How much data would you lose if your laptop was stolen? Have you ever emailed your colleague a file named 'final_final_versionEDITED'? Have you ever struggled to import your spreadsheets into R? Would you be able to write a Data Management Plan as part of a grant proposal? As a researcher, you will encounter research data in many forms, ranging from measurements, numbers and images to documents and publications. Whether you create, receive or collect data, you will certainly need to organise it at some stage of your project. This workshop will provide an overview of some basic principles on how we can work with data more effectively. We will discuss the best practices for research data management and organisation so that our research is auditable and reproducible by ourselves, and others, in the future.     WORKSHOP: Practical tools for managing, moving and analysing data https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/workshop-practical-tools-for-managing-moving-and-analysing-data Are you constantly moving, storing, sharing and analysing data in complex scenarios throughout your research projects? Managing data well is now more important than ever for biological research but it can also be frustrating and difficult to know where to start! This hands-on workshop will explore and discuss data management challenges and introduce simple steps towards managing active research data. Participants will become familiar with CloudStor and its associated tools and services for organising, storing, sharing and analysing data, in a safe and secure way. Topics such as cloud storage, collaborative editing, versioning and data sharing will be discussed and demonstrated. You will learn how to set up an automatic way to move your data to the cloud so that your data is safe and secure. We’ll also show you how CloudStor integrates with data analysis solutions including Juypter Notebooks and Galaxy. This is a hands-on workshop using CloudStor (AARNet’s file sync, share and storage service). CloudStor is available to Australian researchers and provides one terabyte of storage to every individual researcher at AARNet-connected institutions. It provides a learning journey starting with learning about how we can automate processes that can be reproduced to analyse our biological data. The course will begin with discussing what opportunities and challenges are associated with aspects of bioinformatics analyses. We will address a subset of them in greater detail in the central part of the course and provide time for participants to practise using some of the associated bioinformatics tools. Focusing on solutions around handling biological data, we will cover programming in R, version control, statistical analyses, and data exploration. The R component of the course will cover from the foundations of programming in R to how to use some of the most popular R packages (dplyr and ggplot2) for data manipulation and visualisation. No prior R experience or previous knowledge of programming is required. At the end of the course we will address issues relating to reusability and reproducibility. Day 1 will introduce you to next generation sequencing technologies (NGS) and how they work, providers, common bioinformatics workflows, standardised file types, quality control. This session will include an introduction to Galaxy. [Galaxy](https://galaxyproject.org/) is an open, web-based platform for data-intensive life science research that enables non-bioinformaticians to create, run, tune, and share their own bioinformatic analyses. Day 2 will be hands-on practicals on using Galaxy to explore sequencing quality control, before and after removal of low quality samples.     Long Reads Workshop 2021 https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/long-reads-workshop-2021 **This event has been postponed from 2020 due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. The speakers were confirmed for our 2020 event, and we are hopeful they will be able to attend in 2021.** This two-day workshop will provide a combination of presentation of use cases of long read RNAseq, technology developments from the Chief Scientific Officers of leading long read technology companies, sample processing hints and tips from the experts in sequencing facilities at Earlham Institute and Uppsala’s SciLifeLab. In addition we will provide some hands on examples of quantification, differential expression and resistance gene enrichment sequencing (e.g. RenSeq). Please email training@earlham.ac.uk if you would like to be notified as soon as registrations and abstract submissions open. Who is this event for? Research staff and students who are current users of long read technology for the production of transcriptomic data and those analysing long read RNAseq data to produce genome annotations, differential expression analyses and those using RenSeq.
