In particular, this training is aimed at those who want to become Software Carpentry and Data Carpentry instructors, run workshops and contribute to the Carpentry training materials. You don't currently have to be an instructor or a teacher to attend this workshop, but you do need to be willing and committed to becoming one and to improving your teaching techniques. Software Carpentry and Data Carpentry's mission is to help scientists and engineers get more research done in less time and with less pain by teaching them basic lab skills for scientific computing. This hands-on two-day workshop covers the basics of educational psychology and instructional design, and looks at how to use these ideas in both intensive workshops and regular classes. The workshop is a mix of lectures and hands-on lessons where you practice giving a short lesson using approaches learned and implement some of the teaching techniques which we will discuss. This is training for teaching, not technical training; you do not need any particular technical background, and we will not be teaching that. This workshop is based on the constantly revised and updated curriculum. Requirements: When possible, participants should bring a laptop that can be connected to Internet to follow teaching materials and developing shared note. </br> A device for recording audio and video (mobile phones and laptops are OK) will also be useful as throughout the two days, we are going to record one another teaching in pairs or threes. It does not have to be high-quality, but it should be good enough that you can understand what someone is saying. Please note that after this course is over, you will be asked to do three short follow-up exercises online in order to finish qualifying as an instructor: the details are available at https://carpentries.github.io/instructor-training/checkout/. If you have any questions about the workshop, the reading material, or anything else, please get in touch. All participants are required to abide by The Carpentries' Code of Conduct. Accessibility: We are committed to making this workshop accessible to everybody. Please contact the workshop organisers to let them know if need any assistance to make your participation at the workshop more comfortable. Materials will be provided in advance of the workshop and large-print handouts are available if needed by notifying the organizers in advance. If we can help making learning easier for you (e.g. requirements related to mobility, dietary etc.) please please get in touch (using contact details below) and we will attempt to provide them. Preparation: Please read the following before the workshop begins: 1. The Science of Learning Please also read through one of the episodes below carefully, so that you can do some exercises based on it on the first day of the class. 2019-04-03 09:00:00 UTC 2019-04-05 00:00:00 UTC [] jessica.lindvall@scilifelab.se [] [] [] [] []

Course: Biostatistics Essentials: a blackboard approach https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/course-biostatistics-essentials-a-blackboard-approach Course name: Biostatistics Essentials: a blackboard approach Course dates: 2019-05-21 and 2019-05-23 Course location: SciLifeLab, Uppsala University, BMC, Husargatan 3 Please apply here: https://goo.gl/forms/6aIQ4BFIrGDJ9cL92 ------------------------------------------------ National course open for PhD students, postdocs, researchers and other employees in need of biostatistical skills within all Swedish universities. The course is geared towards life scientists wanting to be able to understand and use basic statistical methods. It would also suit those already applying biostatistical methods but have never got a chance to reflect on and truly grasp the basic statistical concepts, such as the commonly misinterpreted p-value! Important date Application opens: now Application closes: 2019-03-31 Confirmation to accepted students: 2019-04-16 Responsible teachers: Olga Dethlefsen, Eva Freyhult If you do not receive information according to the above dates please contact olga.dethlefsen@nbis.se, eva.freyhult@nbis.se Course content ● Basic statistical theory and concepts incl. stochastic variables, density and distribution functions, central limit theorem, confidence intervals ● Hypothesis testing ● Resampling ● Linear and logistic regression methods ● Model selection and regularization ● Unsupervised learning, incl. clustering and dimension reduction methods Education In this course we focus on active learning approach. The course participants are expected to do some pre-course reading and exercises, corresponding up to 16h studying. The education consists of teaching blocks alternating between mini-lectures, group discussions, live coding sessions etc. A special focus is put on understanding basic concepts by solving problems with pen and paper. We believe in less-is-more principle, so be ready to say no to digital exhaustion to truly learn something with our modern “blackboard approach”. Literature ● An Introduction to Statistical Learning, Gareth James, Daniela Witten, Trevor Hastie and Robert Tibshirani (.pdf freely available) ● Additional teachers’ choice Entry requirements ● No prior knowledge is assumed ● BYOL (bring your own laptop) with R and RStudio installed ● Prior experience using R and RStudio is welcome; pre-course exercises will be available for those new to R/RStudio Due to limited space the course can accommodate maximum of 25 participants. If we receive more applications, participants will be selected based on several criteria. Selection criteria include correct entry requirements, motivation to attend the course as well as gender and geographical balance. Course fee A course fee* of 1700 SEK will be invoiced to accepted participants. The fee includes lunches, coffee and snacks. *Please note that NBIS cannot invoice individuals 2019-05-21 09:00:00 UTC 2019-05-24 00:00:00 UTC [] jessica.lindvall@scilifelab.se [] [] [] [] []
