Confirmed speakers for this event include Professor O. I. Shittu (Department of Statistics, University of Ibadan) and Professor Kayode Ayinde (Department of Statistics, Federal University of Technology). The career talk will include discussions by Professor Kayode Ayinde on the discipline called statistics and its relationship with mathematics, social science, medicine, law, agriculture etc.   Professor Shittu will talk about the uses of statistics by individuals, businesses, researchers, government and the international community. Statisticians are one of the highest paid people in the world today and we will share the career prospects and opportunities for qualified statisticians.  This event is organised in collaboration with the Professional Statisticians Society of Nigeria.  For more information about Nigeria local group visit  www.rss.org.uk/nigeria Royal Statistical Society The Royal Statistical Society, London, United Kingdom The Royal Statistical Society London United Kingdom EC1Y 8LX [] [] [] workshops_and_courses [] HDRUK
  • Industrial Strength Data Science presents: "a hell of a lot of skills"

Industrial Strength Data Science presents: "a hell of a lot of skills" https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/industrial-strength-data-science-presents-a-hell-of-a-lot-of-skills A panel discussion and networking event for those interested in the long term success of data science as a profession.   About this Event Being a data scientist involves a wide range of diverse skills, such as mathematics, statistics, programming, technical communication, problem-solving, business knowledge, machine learning, and on and on. And there are a number of routes into the discipline, from university courses, on-the-job training, self-taught & online courses, and data-intense PhDs. This jumble of skills and routes means no two data scientists look the same. Combined with the variety of domains that data scientists work in, and the innovative nature of the role, it is hard to definitively list the required skills of a data scientist. Is this ambiguity a problem? Has the time come for a professional data science body to create an accreditation system? What would be the benefits, and how could it practically operate? Wouldn't it create an elitist program, and stifle innovation? And who could possibly be the gatekeeper? What do you think? *This event will be followed by a drinks reception. We will explore these questions and more at our next "Industrial Strength Data Science" event on the evening of Thursday 25th July 2019, with a fantastic panel of speakers and contributors. Registration alongside refreshments will be open from 6.30 pm See you there!   Royal Statistical Society The Royal Statistical Society, London, United Kingdom The Royal Statistical Society London United Kingdom EC1Y 8LX [] [] [] workshops_and_courses [] HDRUK

ICSTA'19 - The International Conference of Statistics: Theory and Applications https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/icsta-19-the-international-conference-of-statistics-theory-and-applications The goal of ICSTA'19 is to gather scholars from all over the world to present advances in each of the specialized fields and to foster an environment conducive to exchanging ideas and information.  This conference will also provide an ideal environment to develop new collaborations and meet experts on the fundamentals, applications, and products of the mentioned fields.  Interested authors, researchers, and industrial experts are invited to register for the conference that best resonates with their technical background.  Royal Statistical Society The Royal Statistical Society, London, United Kingdom The Royal Statistical Society London United Kingdom EC1Y 8LX [] [] [] workshops_and_courses [] HDRUK
  • RSS Highland Local Group: Can simple tests based on randomisation be used in assessment of research misconduct?

RSS Highland Local Group: Can simple tests based on randomisation be used in assessment of research misconduct? https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/rss-highland-local-group-can-simple-tests-based-on-randomisation-be-used-in-assessment-of-research-misconduct Speaker: Dr Mark Bolland, Associate Professor, Dept of Medicine, University of Auckland About the event: A number of high profile cases of research misconduct have occurred where individuals have published numerous clinical trials with fabricated data over many years. Systematic reviewers sometimes identify outlying trials with concerning issues or where the data seem too good to be true. Several cases of research misconduct have now been identified by using simple tests to try and identify whether the trial results are similar to what would be expected if randomisation took place. In this talk, I will present the results of simple techniques we have used in large cases of research fraud, and discuss how they can be used and their problems. The techniques might be useful for people undertaking systematic reviews (e.g. clinical trialists when developing a trial protocol) who come upon outlying trial results or trials that raise concern about research integrity.     Refreshments from 3.30pm with talk starting at 4pm   Royal Statistical Society The Royal Statistical Society, London, United Kingdom The Royal Statistical Society London United Kingdom EC1Y 8LX [] [] [] workshops_and_courses [] HDRUK
  • Workshop on High-Content Imaging and Data Science for Virtual Screening and Drug Discovery

    13 - 17 May 2019

    Bled, Slovenia

    Elixir node event
Workshop on High-Content Imaging and Data Science for Virtual Screening and Drug Discovery https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/workshop-on-high-content-imaging-and-data-science-for-virtual-screening-and-drug-discovery High-throughput phenotypic screening, based on high-content imaging, is increasingly often used as a tool for drug discovery. Compound screens are used to find hits that produce the desired phenotypes in relevant cellular assays. Genomic screens are used to elucidate the underlying molecular pathways and identify suitable drug targets. Since high-content screening produces a lot of data, data science approaches such as statistics, machine learning and neural networks can help interpret the collected data. Just as virtual screening can be performed in chemoinformatics (learning predictive models for QSAR - quantitative structure-activity relations) from data obtained through compound screens, similar approaches can be taken in the context of high-throughput phenotypic screening. This will be the first event of its kind in the region of Slovenia and Friuli-Venezia-Giulia. The event will bring together a group of experts covering different topics in the fields of high-content screening, image analysis, chemoinformatics and machine learning. This will allow graduate students and researchers from both academia and industry to familiarize themselves with these cutting-edge topics. The workshop will have an impact on both the academic and industrial sector in the region (e.g. biotech companies of all sizes). The workshop is part of the INTERREG V-A Italy-Slovenia 2014-2020 project TRAIN (Big Data and Disease Models: A Cross- border Platform for Validated Biotech Industry Kits), which brings together experts on the topic from academia and industry. 2019-05-13 09:00:00 UTC 2019-05-17 18:00:00 UTC Jozef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia Rikli Balance Hotel, Cankarjeva cesta 4, SI-4260 Bled, Slovenia, Bled, Slovenia Rikli Balance Hotel, Cankarjeva cesta 4, SI-4260 Bled, Slovenia Bled Gorenjska Slovenia SI-4260 Drug discovery Genomics Rikli Balance Hotel elixir@mf.uni-lj.si European UnionINTERREG V-A Italy-Slovenia 2014-2020 project TRAIN PhD studentsGraduate studentsResearchersBusiness EntrepreneursBiotechnology CompaniesPharmaceutical Industry workshops_and_courses registration_of_interest INTERREGPhenotypic screeningData analysisVirtual ScreeningHigh-content imaging
