Introduction to Biopython
29 - 30 March 2018
Ghent, Belgium
Introduction to Biopython http://www.vib.be/en/training/research-training/courses/Pages/Introduction-to-Biopython.aspx https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/introduction-to-biopython Understand what Biopython is and what it can do. Learn how to get Biopython running. Learn how to retrieve data records from NCBI. Learn how to read and write sequence files. Learn how to run BLAST from Python and read the results. Learn how to read and write phylogenetic tree files. Learn how to read and write 3D structure files. Learn how to use the Biopython documentation, examples, and where to find help. Understand what alternatives to Biopython exist and what they can do. Biopython is the best-known Python library to process biological data. This training is aimed to empower you to use Biopython to make your research more efficient. The first day of the training is to give an overview of Biopython. You are going to start with your first steps in Biopython on the command line. Afterwards, you will take a tour of the most important components: sequences, NCBI queries, BLAST, trees, and 3D structures. You will try each of these modules on practical examples. Please don't hesitate to ask questions about Python basics or particular data formats (e.g. XML or NGS data). The second day of the training is to broaden your perspective: What other features does the library have? How can you use the documentation effectively? What is Biopython not capable of? What can I do to visualize my data? Are there alternatives? If you have your own data that you would like to work on with Biopython in more detail, there is room for that. For me, the most important thing is to identify concrete Python modules and functions that help you to get your research done. Participants are encouraged to submit a description of their research topic and/or the questions they would like to answer with Biopython. Additionally, participants can bring their own data that they would like to process in Python to the training. 2018-03-29 09:30:00 UTC 2018-03-30 17:00:00 UTC VIB Bioinformatics Core BioAccelerator, Ghent, Belgium BioAccelerator Ghent Belgium 9052 [] [] [] [] [] [] -

Best practices in Research Software
15 May 2019
Ghent, Belgium
Best practices in Research Software https://training.vib.be/product/50 https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/best-practices-in-research-software Four simple recommendations to encourage best practices in open research software is a publication that addresses this issue by providing a simple, yet robust framework of recommendations that encourage the adoption of existing best practices in research software development. These recommendations are designed around Open Science values, and provide practical suggestions that contribute to making research software and its source code more discoverable, reusable and transparent. These recommendations recognise that not everyone can or want to make their software open from day one, but we encourage you to learn from the recommendations and adapt them to your needs. For example, you can have a private repository, you can and should still have a license, make contributions clear, and have a registry of your software. Participants must bring a laptop with a Mac, Linux, or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc.) that they have administrative privileges on. They should have a few specific software packages installed (listed below) Recommendations to make your research software open Reference 2019-05-15 09:00:00 UTC 2019-05-15 00:00:00 UTC VIB Bioinformatics Core Clemenspoort Gent, Ghent, Belgium Clemenspoort Gent Ghent Belgium 9000 [] [] [] [] [] [] -

In the annual Technology Transfer course, the VIB Innovation & Business Team, supported by external speakers from industry, will go into detail on the practicalities of making technology transfer happen. We will discuss the basics of Intellectual Property Rights, including a hands-on patent search on your favorite topic. We will go through the term sheets and contracts that shape the framework of industrial collaborations and investments. We will have a lively case study to highlight the potentially complex relationships between scientist, TT-officer and company representative, and give an overview of the various stages of starting a new venture. If you want to participate, we ask you to submit a short abstract on a potential business idea, describing briefly the concept and potential applications. Ghent, Belgium
Introduction to Protein Structure Analysis https://training.vib.be/product/139 https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/introduction-to-protein-structure-analysis Get to know the data generated from protein structure determination experiments (high-resolution NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, electron microscopy, ...) and where to get it. Display protein structure data and compare structures, through the use of Yasara. Create high-quality graphical representations of the structures. Calculate the effect of mutations on the stability of your protein. 2020-02-18 09:00:00 UTC 2020-02-18 00:00:00 UTC VIB Bioinformatics Core Clemenspoort Gent, Ghent, Belgium Clemenspoort Gent Ghent Belgium 9000 [] [] [] [] [] [] -
