We aim to give individuals experience at working on the command line and manipulating large datasets (we don't require any prior knowledge for this course). This interactive and hands-on course will introduce you to Linux, databases and programming using various datasets. Over 4 days participants are introduced to various topics, from the basics of Linux, to a widely used scripting language such as Python and the world’s most popular open source database (MySQL). With the idea of enabling you to manipulate biological data beyond rigid user interfaces. Throughout the week, lectures and practical sessions will reinforce new concepts progressively • Manage your own database (create your own knowledge base). Free yourself from spreadsheets! • Parse your vcf and compare different samples and find the most common variants The learning objectives for the course could be summarised as follows. • Working comfortably in command line • Becoming familiar with MySQL • Writing simple scripts to manage data 2016-08-22 12:00:00 UTC 2016-08-26 12:00:00 UTC Thermo Fisher Scientific GmbH Lindhagensgatan 76 , Stockholm, Sweden Thermo Fisher Scientific GmbH Lindhagensgatan 76 Stockholm Sweden 11292 [] [] [] [] [] []
  • Bioinformatics Introductory course

    16 January - 21 March 2017

    Uppsala, Sweden

Bioinformatics Introductory course https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/bioinformatics-introductory-course Objective: The course aims to give a solid basis in basic bioinformatics methods. It covers the theories, algorithms and practical applications of computer-based methodology for the analysis of Nucleic and protein sequences. On completion of the course, the student should be able to: - account for the fundamental concepts within bioinformatics - independently carry out homology analyses of both protein - and DNA sequences and interpret the results - use the most common commands in Unix/Linux, - independently build a "workbench" for bioinformatics with publicly available software suited to the students own needs, - use biological databases - independently use technologies and analysis of Next Generation Sequencing data. and - manage methods for the analysis of expression data. Content: The course covers bioinformatics methods such as theories, algorithms and practical applications in computer-based methodology for the analysis of DNA and protein sequences. The course also covers theories for the analysis of RNAseq expression data and different analytical methods related to Next Generation Sequencing. Topics to be covered includes: biological databases, homology analyses, gene analyses (emphasis on software packages like e.g. EMBOSS and UGENE), web-based analytical tools, Unix OS, comparative genomics, functional genomics, GWAS analysis, molecular evolution, RNAseq expression analysis, annotation of new genomes. The course is based on lectures, exercises and project work. Apart from the written and the oral examination, compulsory components occur within e. g. exercises, project work and laboratory sessions. 2017-01-16 13:55:00 UTC 2017-03-21 13:55:00 UTC Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Uppsala Biocenter, Uppsala, Sweden Uppsala Biocenter Uppsala Uppsala Sweden [] [] [] workshops_and_courses [] []
