    University of Melbourne, Australia

Introduction to the Genomics Virtual Laboratory and Galaxy for life scientists https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/introduction-to-the-genomics-virtual-laboratory-and-galaxy-for-life-scientists Galaxy is an open source, web-based platform for accessible, reproducible, and transparent computational biomedical research. It allows users without programming experience to easily specify parameters and run individual tools as well as larger workflows. It also captures run information so that any user can repeat and understand a complete computational analysis. Finally, it allows users to share and publish analyses via the web. This beginners workshop will introduce Galaxy's interface, tool use, histories, and workflows and get new users of the Genomics Virtual Laboratory up and running. 2016-06-07 09:00:00 UTC 2016-06-07 00:00:00 UTC VLSCI - University of Melbourne Lab-14, VLSCI, University of Melbourne, Australia Lab-14, VLSCI University of Melbourne Australia Bioinformatics Computational biology Genomics Computer science [] [] [] workshops_and_courses [] ABRVLSCIBioinformatics

Participants will reflect together on their own experiences and discuss what are the challenges, mechanisms and recognition systems are for those who get involved in open source. We would like to use this also as an opportunity to further define what would be the best practice model in terms of software development when it comes to activities under EMBL-ABR. Bioinformaticians involved with software development are the target audience. 2016-12-08 09:00:00 UTC 2016-12-08 00:00:00 UTC EMBl-ABR Lab-14, University of Melbourne, Australia Lab-14 University of Melbourne Australia Computational biology Bioinformatics [] [] [] workshops_and_courses [] ABRlifescienceBioinformatics

  • THE APPLICATION OF POPULATION GENOMICS TO FISHERIES MANAGEMENT

    8 - 10 May 2017

    Faro, Portugal

THE APPLICATION OF POPULATION GENOMICS TO FISHERIES MANAGEMENT https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/the-application-of-population-genomics-to-fisheries-management SCOPE Population genomics enables the identification of both neutral and adaptive markers; the former can provide information about connectivity among areas due to migration and drift and the latter about strategies of adaptation to changing environment/conditions due to selection. These insights can provide the basis for defining genetically isolated populations and/or locally-adapted management units and informing conservation strategies. While providing valuable opportunities for the profitable and sustainable exploitation of marine fish, as an emerging and dynamic field, the best practices and techniques to be applied, and their effective integration into fisheries management and marine conservation strategies are still being developed. TOPIC The Foresight Workshop is designed to bring together fisheries management practitioners, stakeholders involved in fisheries policy making and governance, as well as genomic scientists to facilitate interaction and promote synergistic activities aimed at improved stock monitoring, prediction, and management to ensure sustainability in response to naturally- and anthropogenically-induced changes to the marine environment. OBJECTIVES This EuroMarine 2016 Foresight Workshop offers an important venue to bring together leaders and specialists in fisheries management and genomics to build a knowledge-platform to advance the use of cutting-edge genomic techniques in fisheries stock assessment and provide new methods and technological frameworks to inform fisheries management practices. EXPECTED OUTCOMES Together, the team will put together their complementary expertise to produce a synthesis paper of the current status of the use of population genomics in fisheries management, its applicability, value, and limitations, and also provide a set of guidelines of best practice for obtaining fisheries-relevant data together with its correct interpretation and application in management plans. This synthesis will seek to find common ground and understanding between genomicists, fisheries management practitioners, and policy makers, and provide stratagems for improved collaboration and action. 2017-05-08 09:00:00 UTC 2017-05-10 18:00:00 UTC Rita Castilho, Center for Marine Sciences Faro, Faro, Portugal Faro Faro Portugal 8005-139 Genomics CCMAR, Centre for Marine Sciences euromarine.ccmar@gmail.com Euromarine Postdoctoral ResearchersResearchers 65 workshops_and_courses first_come_first_served []
