  • EMBL-ABR Training & Learning Workshop

    21 March 2016

    Melbourne, Australia

EMBL-ABR Training & Learning Workshop https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/embl-abr-training-learning-workshop This workshop will introduce and discuss the various steps in planning, delivering and assessing success of (Bioinformatics) training. It also provides an overview on key elements in learning. This course aims to make participants aware of the various crucial steps and elements of a hands on session and interactive training as well as where to find useful information. Participants will learn about key ways that adults learn, recognise different styles of learning and training, the roles of the trainer in the classroom and practical tips to ensure interactivity and course opening and closing strategies. This particular course was developed with the specific challenges of delivering bioinformatics training in mind and the settings of end user hands on training sessions instead of traditional lecture based training. 2016-03-21 09:00:00 UTC 2016-03-21 00:00:00 UTC VLSCI - University of Melbourne VLSCI, Melbourne, Australia VLSCI Melbourne Australia Bioinformatics [] [] [] workshops_and_courses [] ABRBPABioinformatics

Advanced Python For Biologists https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/advanced-python-for-biologists-3b007f2f-c334-478c-8b5b-cdbb7a7ce5ee This workshop is aimed at people who already have a basic knowledge of Python and are interested in using the language to tackle larger problems. In it, we will look in detail at the parts of the language which are particularly useful in scientific programming, and at the tools Python offers for making development faster and easier. The course will use examples and exercises drawn from various aspects of bioinformatics work. After completing the workshop, students should be in a position to (1) take advantage of the advanced language features in their own programs and (2) use appropriate tools when developing software programs. 2016-07-25 09:00:00 UTC 2016-05-29 00:00:00 UTC The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, United Kingdom The University of Edinburgh Edinburgh United Kingdom EH9 3FD Bioinformatics Software engineering Biology [] [] [] workshops_and_courses [] []

  • Oxford Nanopore MinION Sequencing - Data Handling, Analysis and Applications

    1 November 2016

    Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Oxford Nanopore MinION Sequencing - Data Handling, Analysis and Applications https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/oxford-nanopore-minion-sequencing-data-handling-analysis-and-applications Nanopore sequencing is one of the newest sequence technologies, in which single DNA molecules are sequenced directly, without the need for an intervening PCR amplification step or a chemical labelling step. It offers the potential of read lengths of tens of kilobases. The Oxford Nanopore MinION is a portable sequencing device that already has proven its power in e.g. the rapid identification of viral pathogens, the monitoring of ebola, genome assembly improvement, and environmental and food safety monitoring. As a member of the pre-release MinION Access Programme (MAP), Edinburgh Genomics has considerable experience in both generating and analyzing MinION sequence data, and also has published one of the first software tools to visualize and analyze these data (M Watson et al. poRe: an R package for the visualization and analysis of nanopore sequencing data. Introduction to the GVL and Galaxy https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/introduction-to-the-gvl-and-galaxy Galaxy is an open source, web-based platform for accessible, reproducible, and transparent computational biomedical research. It allows users without programming experience to easily specify parameters and run individual tools as well as larger workflows. It also captures run information so that any user can repeat and understand a complete computational analysis. This beginners workshop hosted by VLSCI will introduce Galaxy's interface, tool use, histories, and workflows and get new users of the Genomics Virtual Laboratory up and running. This is a hands-on workshop and attendees should bring their own laptops. 2016-11-07 09:00:00 UTC 2016-11-07 00:00:00 UTC VLSCI - University of Melbourne Lab-14, Melbourne, Australia Lab-14 Melbourne Australia Bioinformatics Biomedical science Genomics [] [] [] workshops_and_courses [] ABRVLSCIBioinformatics
