After a brief overview of some existing resources, we will focus on the Gene Ontology, annotations made using the Gene Ontology and tools leveraging those for biomedical discovery.     COSMIC: Exploring cancer genetics at high resolution https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/cosmic-exploring-cancer-genetics-at-high-resolution [COSMIC](http://cancer.sanger.ac.uk) is an expert-curated database of somatic mutations causing human cancer. Broad and comprehensive in scope, it describes over 4 million coding mutations across all human cancer disease types, and encompasses over 20 million somatic variants across other molecular mutation mechanisms in oncogenetics. Mutations are annotated across the entire genome, with deep-resolution expert curation focused on almost 200 key cancer genes. This course will use the live COSMIC website and genome browser to show you how to access and explore this information, seeking to identify genetic causes and targets in all human cancers. The workshop will have three sections: * A brief, practical introduction to ontologies and semantics * Focus on Gene Ontology (GO), annotations made using GO and tools leveraging those annotations for biomedical discovery. * A practical exercise in annotating data with ontologies using EBI tools. A standard annotation exercise will be provided, but attendees are encouraged to bring examples of their own data for annotation, preferably in spreadsheet form.     COSMIC: Integrating and interpreting the world’s knowledge of somatic mutations in cancer https://tess.elixir-europe.org/events/cosmic-integrating-and-interpreting-the-world-s-knowledge-of-somatic-mutations-in-cancer [COSMIC](http://cancer.sanger.ac.uk), the Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer, is the world’s largest and most comprehensive expert manually curated resource for exploring the impact of somatic mutations in human cancer. Based at the Wellcome Sanger Institute and available publicly at https://cancer.sanger.ac.uk/cosmic, the latest release includes almost 6 million coding mutations across 1.4 million samples from over 26,000 papers. COSMIC captures the full spectrum of genomic data relating to somatic mutations, so in addition to coding mutations, gene fusions, non-coding mutations, copy-number variants, methylation and drug resistance mutations are included. This course will use the live COSMIC website and tools to show you how to access and explore this information, seeking to identify genetic causes and targets in all human cancers. The training room is located on the first floor and there is currently no wheelchair or level access available to this level.
