A number of high profile cases of research misconduct have occurred where individuals have published numerous clinical trials with fabricated data over many years. Systematic reviewers sometimes identify outlying trials with concerning issues or where the data seem too good to be true. Several cases of research misconduct have now been identified by using simple tests to try and identify whether the trial results are similar to what would be expected if randomisation took place. In this talk, I will present the results of simple techniques we have used in large cases of research fraud, and discuss how they can be used and their problems. The techniques might be useful for people undertaking systematic reviews (e.g. clinical trialists when developing a trial protocol) who come upon outlying trial results or trials that raise concern about research integrity.
